Shangri-La Restaurant

Shangri-La Restaurant

155
Enterprise Road
Chisipite Harare

Description:

Shangri-la is a mystical, harmonious valley, that has become synonymous with an earthly paradise but particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia — a permanently happy land.  Shangri-la is often used in a similar context to "The Garden of Eden” to represent a paradise on earth.  In the good old stories Shangri-la was supposed to be situated somewhere on the border between China and Tibet, so we are extremely lucky to have our very own Shangri-la right here in Harare just along the Enterprise Road!

Our local Zimbabwean version of Shangri-la is a fittingly handsome venue.  The roofs of the restaurant have been trimmed with red ceramic tiles in the traditional Chinese concave shape.  There is a beautiful open pavilion in the garden as well as extensive seating on the verandah for diners who prefer to eat outside.  The gardens are delightfully landscaped complete with a small flowing water feature which diners have to cross over on a small wooden bridge.  The tables are laid with bright yellow silky tablecloths and tomato red overlays and the chairs have crisp white loose covers on them.  Apart from being very attractive, red is traditionally the colour signifying good fortune and celebration – particularly apt for this setting.  Huge red Chinese lanterns and outdoor lights in the garden complete the alluring and inviting facade.

i was at the establishment onw Wednesday and i have to say i had a great meal. at first the service was slow (grated the place was packed) but when the waiter eventually came i was greatly pleased. the food portions where more than i expected. yes they do serve in excess of your expectations. i loved the place i am definitely going for dinner this Sunday, its my birthday so why not pleasure my self with a full stomach to end the day of my birth.

keep it up Shangri La. your place rocks.

Shangri La Shanty

Having read the reviews here, i wonder if we went to the same restaurant on Wednesday lunchtime?! As we drove in, we were greeted by flapping tablecloths hung over the tennis courts, Chinese restaurant or chinese laundry? The dreadlocked guy who greeted us at the restaurant itself, was great and friendly - unfortunately we never saw him again! Happy Chinese construction workers in overalls wandered around the front gardens, occasionally coming in the front door to refill their tin mugs of tea, then the maid herself appeared to bring in the washing - through the front door as well. Sophisticated this is not!
Perhaps the food would be worth the laundry and workers
atmosphere? NO!!
Half our food arrived, tepid, and the other half arrived after 2 requests, and was hot. Half our food we sent back as it arrived on chipped crockery - not a good look - and we heard the woman next door send her soup back for the same reason.
Food was okay, although the barbeque pork was dry and getting towards biltong, the dish with ginger had been thrown together and the ginger was so thickly sliced it was inedible as opposed to fine slices you can munch on, the steamed pork buns were of varying sizes which was interesting - a work in progress perhaps?
Service was thin on the ground, asked twice to have the wine opened, twice for the rest of the food to arrive and generally had to find a waiter rather than the other way around.
We certainly wouldnt go back - for the prices which are not expensive but neither are they inexpensive, we don't expect to share the verandah with workers in overalls standing around, or have the washing hauled in next to us, or get food served on badly chipped plates, or have it arrive cold and so forth - see above for the rest of the complaints! And when we asked to pay we were quoted R8 to the dollar - how come just about every other shop/restaurant can manage to do the rate of the day, then around R7.5?

Great place
by Clive

This review may be a bit late but I think that it is better late then never. I got married last year and held my wedding and reception at the Shangri la restaurant. Mrs. Hu helped us with choosing the menu and allowed us at that time to also bring in our traditional dishes as well. This really worked out perfectly for us. We had a wonderful time there and our family and friends who attended the celebration with us had great reviews as well.
Ever since that day we and many of our friends have frequented the place and enjoy the food, the garden, etc...

Thanks to all the staff at the restaurant. Also thanks to this website so one can find out more about other places and reviews of places to go and eat out.

Shangri-La: Great Chinese food in Africa
by Muchinda - VT
on November 21, 2009
This is a great place. It is set in a good location, Enterprise road, Harare. There is a cool vibe, lots of different people from all social groups of the nation. A great place to set up a million dollar business deal, get out of trouble with the law, have an awesome afternoon with friends or even suitable for a romantic date. Shangri-La is a place for everyone. Best plan is: go on a Friday afternoon with some mates eat some delicious meals, sit outside in the sun drinking local beer and imported Cape wines, stay as late as possible and enjoy...

Definitely the Pekin duck and Crispy duck. Its the only proper duck in the nation and the ducks are all organically reared, Pekin duck imported from South Africa. World class!

Never disappointed with their food. This Chinese restaurant in Harare is thee best! They have such a wide variety to choose from, and the meals are always available! A great day to spend a Sunday with the family, the gardens are beautiful and although they are renovating, it is not intrusive. Going back for more!
