My Funny Valentine-Shaped Strawberry

| Print | E-mail

A farmer in Tasmania is growing heart-shaped strawberries, and as you might expect, there’s a strong demand for them with Valentine’s Day quickly approaching.

Josh Engwerda, a 22-year-old graduate student from Melbourne, Australia, came up with the idea of growing strawberries in plastic heart-shaped molds. He says he first tested his plan by growing one strawberry inside a Tic-Tac container, which resulted in a perfectly shaped rectangular berry.

Learn a lot from Chocolate

1. It’s Important to Hold Your Temper
It’s not easy to melt chocolate perfectly, just as it’s not easy to find your own boiling point and keep it under control. The fact is, for chocolate to form properly into all those fun shapes that go into the candy box, it has to be tempered. That means it has to be fed the right amount from the chocolate block, at the right time during the melting process, all the while being constantly stirred. In life, it means we have to guard what we take in, and be willing to move and change as necessary in order to get better.

2. Soft Centers Usually Have a Hard Shell
The best liquors, the softest centers, all need some protection around them. So remember that when your co-worker has a tough façade, or your friend appears sort of brittle. Could be they are protecting their soft insides.

3. Meltdowns Can Be Avoided
Real chocolate starts to get soft at 72 degrees. Great candy stores keep the temperature cool rather than add vegetable oils to the mix. You can keep your cool if you remember to turn down the heat.

Bulawayo Coffee Shops

Since the rate of the day is no longer the hot topic in Zimbabwe, it looks like the latest topic on everyone at a coffee shop that has wireless internet connectivity is the expectancy that we will benefit from the arrival of the Seacom cable.

Rates for 1 Gig of data can cost as much as USD 140 as opposed to the same amount costs USD 20 in South Africa. Since this cable is tabled to come into Zimbabwe via the Beitbrigde border and follow the Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway - it will reach Bulawayo first.

Around the world the improvement in access to broadband connectivity has always resulted in a growth in the economy.  This will mean that Bulawayo will get much needed boost in their economy

What Is Eatout's Overview

| Print | E-mail

Eat Out.co.zw is set to change the way things are done a little in Zimbabwe.  We want to give the public like you more opportunity to write freely about your experiences in the food industry.  This will help raise awareness and help out service providers to improve in the areas that you want them to work on.

Here's why restaurants are turning to the internet for all their advertising these days...

Traditional advertising doesn't work anymore for restaurants

Newspaper and radio is too expensive, and the Yellow Pages charge outrageous fees.  Just ONE ad could potentially pay for 6 months of 24/7 advertising on the internet.  Newspaper and radio are usually only local advertising, and restaurants need to reach diners who live outside their area.

Google is where everyone is looking for restaurants
1000's of diners search Google every day looking for restaurants, they don't buy the paper to find them, they don't listen to the radio, they don't even use the yellow pages book anymore - they go straight to the internet, because they know that's where they'll find what they want.  (click here to see an article on internet users in Africa.) There are 1.4 Million internet users in Zimbabwe.

Diners love choice
It's just like walking down the main street of town, the busiest street is the one with dozens of restaurants to choose from, not just one.   A web site with lots to choose from will always be more popular than just looking at one restaurant, that's why every restaurant needs to be listed on a specialized restaurant dining guide web site like Eatout.

Here's why every restaurant needs to be seen on an Eatout Restaurant Dining Guide...

The internet is cluttered with thousands of businesses competing for traffic and to be seen.  Restaurants are being told to "get online now" but the problem is, most restaurants don't know the first thing about the internet and can't be bothered learning, they're too busy cooking and managing their staff to find the time!

But they know they need to do something, the 3 choices they have are - pay a web company excessive amounts for a fancy bells and whistles website ($2000.00 or more) - build a website themselves or just do nothing!   Each of these options results in the same thing - NO new business or new customers.

Even if their new fancy website looks totally awesome, how long will it take Google to put it on page one - I can tell you now it just won't make it!

So frustration sets in - the site is getting hardly any traffic, can't be found anywhere on Google, it's not getting any new customers or its too costly to maintain.

Eatout is the solution - a Restaurant Dining Guide online like NO OTHER out there...

A specialised restaurant dining guide that knows how to market a restaurant successfully, that doesn't cost a fortune and actually produces RESULTS!

Eatout has the added advantage of having its own in house experienced search engine optimizer to help get first page rankings on Google.

Troops in Iraq drinking Zimbabwean Coffee

| Print | E-mail

When you next drink a cup "bad" coffee just think that it could be a lot worse than any thing you make be going through here in Zimbabwe.  Imagine that while you sip the espresso in a leafy Harare suburb or a quiet restaurant in Bulawayo there is a solider sipping a cuppa jo in the hot desert in Iraq.

According to the Leopard Forest Company - the troops in Iraq are drinking coffee that was grown in the eastern highlands right here in Zimbabwe.

14th of January saw a lot of the restaurants that had closed for the Christmas Break - reopen.  If you had a table booked at Leonardos for Dinner then you will be pleased to note that you were fortunate.  According to a very reliable source (Mr Marini - Snr) the young Marini and family was snowed under and was fighting to get back in time to open the restaurant. (I don't think they will want to see snow again for a long time.)

How should restaurant owners respond to reviews

| Print | E-mail

Annette from Mama Mia recently wrote this as a response to one of the reviews.

Thank you to the reviewer for your constructive review. We, at Mama Mia appreciate your comments re our " not very creative menu", and would ask if you have any ideas of what other dishes you would like to see on the menu, so that we can endevour to try to include them, working within the constraints of what is locally available on a regular basis  and at a non prohibitive price, because as you rightly pointed out cost have to be kept down so that dishes don't become very, very expensive to produce and so this has to be passed on to the diner. Here we would like to point out a small error in your review re our prices, as we average about $20 per head which would include soft drinks as well.
